Candy makers push energy, spice and global flavors into summer season

Confectionery brands are rolling out seasonal releases designed to capture consumer attention through functional positioning and adventurous flavor combinations. Three brands are leading the charge with distinct approaches to innovation ahead of peak summer snacking.

Alert Pop's caffeine candy

Alert Pop is positioning itself as a portable alternative to energy drinks by converting caffeine delivery into a lollipop format. The brand uses organic green tea caffeine and is sweetened with xylitol and erythritol, which the company describes as tooth-friendly ingredients. Founder Stephen Caldwell stated that the brand sought to create "a better way to stay awake – portable, enjoyable and effective" while remaining a smarter sweet choice. The product targets drivers, commuters, students and night shift workers, positioning convenience and reduced bathroom breaks as key differentiators from liquid energy beverages.

Hi-Chew expands with lychee and raspberry

Hi-Chew, owned by Morinaga America, launched a Lychee & Raspberry Stick as an exclusive at Walgreens from May 1 through July 31. The chewy candy combines a tart raspberry outer layer with a lychee-flavored center, creating what the company describes as tastes that become more pronounced with each bite. The launch marks the beginning of Hi-Chew's package redesign featuring brighter visuals and clearer flavor callouts. Teruhiro Kawabe, chief representative for Hi-Chew USA and president and CEO of Morinaga America, said the product offers "adventurous, non-traditional candy flavors" and reflects the brand's evolution toward "a more modern, engaging experience."

Hot Tamales brings tropical heat

Just Born Quality Confections' Hot Tamales brand introduced Tropical Heat, a new lineup of spicy-sweet candies in three varieties: Fiery Lime, Mango Chili and Pineapple Picante. Zachary Greenfield, brand manager for Hot Tamales, described the line as addressing consumer demand for "bold, unexpected taste experiences" while maintaining the fiery personality the brand is known for. The products are available at major retailers including Walmart, Dollar Tree, Albertsons and Kroger, plus select regional grocers.

The broader shift

These launches reflect a wider trend in confectionery, where shoppers are seeking multisensory experiences and unexpected textures alongside sweetness. Both established brands and emerging players are emphasizing better-for-you positioning and experimental indulgence as two distinct consumer pulls in the market.
