Pure Leaf launches sparkling tea aimed at balanced mental focus

Pure Leaf Mental Focus, the brand's first sparkling beverage, launches as the joint venture between PepsiCo and Unilever seeks a foothold in the functional tea category. The drink combines naturally occurring caffeine from black tea with added L-theanine, an amino acid from tea leaves intended to support focus and cognitive function.

The positioning reflects a deliberate departure from mainstream energy drinks. Mental Focus caps its caffeine at 69 milligrams, well below typical energy beverages that emphasize high-intensity stimulation. Zach Harris, general manager of the Pepsi Lipton Partnership in North America, framed the move as responding to consumer demand for balanced wellness rather than extreme performance. "A lot of these functional beverages are really focused on energy and performance, high caffeine intensity, and we found this white space that's a little bit more balanced, a little bit more approachable," Harris said.

The drink contains zero grams of sugar and zero calories. It comes in peach and raspberry flavors. Pure Leaf's tea-forward brand identity guided the formulation. Harris emphasized that using tea-derived ingredients and L-theanine strengthened brand authenticity: "We really can leverage Pure Leaf's existing strengths while layering in these functional benefits so it's accessible, it's authentic to the brand."

This product extends a strategy the Pepsi Lipton Partnership has pursued with Pure Leaf. The venture launched a zero sugar sweet tea for the brand in 2024. Mental Focus taps into what industry observers call "soft wellness" culture, where consumers seek low-effort, convenient ways to feel better without the commitment or intensity of dedicated performance supplements.
