Clean eating takes top nutrition trend of 2026

Clean eating has become the dominant nutrition trend of 2026, surpassing plant-based and anti-inflammatory diets in consumer demand. What started as a celebrity-driven trend has moved into mainstream purchasing decisions, driven by consumer demand for foods perceived as natural, minimally processed, easy to understand, with short ingredient lists and few additives.

The gut health industry is accelerating alongside clean eating. The sector is currently worth $60 billion and is on track to reach $114 billion within seven years, according to Grand View Research. This growth reflects mounting consumer awareness of gut health's connection to immunity, digestion, mental wellbeing and metabolic health. Gut health innovation is now expanding beyond yogurts and fermented staples into confectionery, snacks, drinks and dairy alternatives.

Protein remains one of the top purchasing drivers, followed by brand familiarity, cultural or family preferences, low added sugar and flavour variety. From enriched snacks and beverages to indulgent formats with added functionality, protein demand is reshaping product development and shelf strategy.

Emerging ingredients including collagen, beef tallow, adaptogens, apple cider vinegar and reishi mushrooms are gaining traction as consumers seek targeted, benefit-led formulations that promise outcomes such as beauty benefits, stress support and energy boosting. Meanwhile, innovation momentum is shifting away from artificial intelligence toward tangible sustainability solutions, including cell-based products, plant-based foods and supply-chain resilience initiatives. As regulatory frameworks evolve, these advances are set to reshape how food is produced and scaled.
