Arla-DMK merger unlocks whey protein capacity across Europe

Arla Foods has absorbed Germany's DMK to form Europe's largest dairy co-operative in what the industry sees as a significant structural shift. The merger gives Arla access to DMK's market position in one of Europe's largest dairy and dairy-alternatives markets while boosting milk supply and cheese production capacity.

The real opportunity lies in whey. Increased cheese output from DMK's facilities will generate larger whey streams for the two co-ops' existing processing joint venture. This matters because demand for whey protein ingredients, particularly high-value concentrates (WPC80) and isolates that sell for thousands of euros per tonne, consistently exceeds what the market can currently supply. Availability is often sold out months in advance.

Protein consumption trends favour dairy. Consumers want more protein in their diets from natural sources, and protein claims boost a product's perceived value in retail and business-to-business channels. That combination has pushed processors to route milk into cheese production rather than butterfat, creating pricing and demand volatility in commodity markets. Within whey itself, standard powders are declining as production shifts toward higher-value ingredients.

Arla is not alone in seizing the opportunity. FrieslandCampina, also integrating a merger with Milcobel completed in late 2025, is investing heavily to boost whey processing capacity. The Dutch multinational acquired Wisconsin Whey Protein to expand its North American reach and invested 90 million euros to upgrade production at three sites in the Netherlands, supporting the production of WPC80, instantised whey proteins and specialty microparticulated whey for applications such as high-protein drinks, bars and yogurts.

Arla is making similar moves. In addition to the whey processing joint venture with DMK, the co-operative has acquired Volac's whey nutrition business in Wales and converted a facility in Denmark into an ingredients hub. The leadership team has set a two-year timeline to complete the Arla-DMK integration and turn the merger into a unified operation. Scale becomes a competitive advantage in this market, especially when manufacturers need to meet demand at speed and volume.
