April saw five major grocery exec appointments

Grocery industry leadership saw significant turnover in April across finance, operations and merchandising roles.

Market Basket appointed Chuck Casassa, a 50-year veteran of the New England chain, as president late in the month. Donald T. Mulligan, who led the company as interim CEO for about seven months, is retiring but will remain as an advisor. The moves follow the ouster of former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas last year amid a family dispute over company management.

Fresh Value CEO Terry Stanley announced his departure effective May 2, succeeded by Shane Holliday, the Alabama grocer's vice president of operations who joined the company last year.

Food City promoted Paul Cox to senior vice president and CFO in early April, succeeding Eddie Neely who retired after serving in the role since early 2021. Sarah Baldwin, the company's director of finance and planning, will take over as vice president of finance. Cox will also join the company's board.

Associated Wholesale Grocers named Joe Kelley as chief operating officer effective April, bringing him from Kroger where he served as senior vice president of retail divisions. Kelley will oversee merchandising, procurement, distribution, sales, marketing and support center operations.

BJ's Wholesale Club appointed Stephanie Reibling as executive vice president and chief merchandising officer early in the month. Reibling comes from her own strategy consulting firm and previously served as senior vice president and general merchandise manager at Sam's Club.
