Pistachio Squeeze Tightens Beyond Dubai Chocolate Hype

Pistachio markets are facing a tight supply situation driven by multiple simultaneous pressures: sustained demand from Dubai chocolate and other confectionery innovations, disrupted logistics from Iran's military conflict, and lower-than-expected harvests across all three major producers.

Dubai chocolate momentum has not faded

The viral popularity of Dubai chocolate last year created an explosion in global pistachio demand. Commodity prices for pistachios jumped by a third due to this demand surge. Since then, demand has spread beyond the crispy treat to a wider range of pistachio-themed confectionery products. Industry contacts describe demand as "really strong in recent years," with Dubai chocolate plus other product innovations and marketing efforts driving much of that growth.

Three major producers reporting weak harvests

Turkey, the US, and Iran have all experienced harvests that came in below expectations this past year, although the US still had a strong crop overall. The outlook for the 2026-27 season is more concerning: the US and Iran are predicted to see much smaller crops ahead, according to market forecasts.

Iran conflict complicates logistics but not physical supply

Iran is the world's second-largest pistachio producer behind the US. The military conflict has added logistical challenges, but industry contacts report that the war has not severely cut physical supply. Pistachio is still moving through overland routes, though more slowly and in smaller volumes. Iran was already dealing with trade limitations, domestic issues, and communication problems before the military conflict intensified at the end of February.

Predictions of a production pullback in Iran are being linked more to weather challenges and production issues than to the war itself.

Supply described as "tight" rather than critically short

Market analysts hesitate to call the situation a definitive shortage. Instead, industry contacts describe it as a tight or cautious supply situation. Market players are reporting that liquidity has been very thin since crop estimates started coming out, and many US sellers are taking a cautious stance ahead of what they expect to be an "off-year" in the cyclical pistachio market.

Weather remains a structural headwind

Extreme heat in the US has affected the size and quality of pistachios, according to growers. Drought conditions are being factored into crop outlooks across regions. Reduced pistachio yields have been linked to the effects of climate change, suggesting that supply pressure may persist beyond the near-term combination of demand and geopolitical disruption.
